Extending VHF Coverage in Alaska's Coastal Waters

Maritime Distress Communications

MXAK is committed to enhancing maritime safety and emergency response by expanding a statewide network of VHF radio sites in areas with limited or no existing coverage.

MXAK’s VHF network fills critical gaps in Alaska's distress communications and supplements missing coverage in the Coast Guard's Rescue 21 capabilities. These sites help ensure that “Mayday” calls are heard, aid in timely search and rescue operations, and enhance communication between mariners, emergency responders, and port authorities.

Since May 2023, MXAK has made over 200 broadcasts on behalf of the Coast Guard. Additionally, MXAK’s Maritime Information Specialists have overheard and answered 10 distress calls, including three MAYDAY calls, and relayed critical information assist the Coast Guard in rescue missions.

MXAK is actively expanding the VHF network with buildout plans for several locations along the Bering Strait region in 2025.
